I held her hand as she sat on the curb, and all she kept saying was, “I wasn’t on my phone, I wasn’t on my phone, I promise.”

I came upon an accident this morning. A young girl sitting on the curb hysterical. Her truck just flipped upside down with the entire cab smashed into the pavement. It was a miracle she escaped with her life.

I held her hand as she sat on the curb, and all she kept saying was, “I wasn’t on my phone, I wasn’t on my phone, I promise.” Through gasping sobs she also said kept repeating, “My mom is going to be so mad. She spent so much money on that truck.”

I tried to assure her that her mom was simply going to be so thankful that her daughter was sitting on that curb breathing, but something inside me told me that young girl didn’t really believe that.

What was more disturbing than the accident were the people flying by after it had just happened. As the four or five of us, who had stopped to help, were trying to merge back out into traffic, not a single person slowed down to let us in. Everyone was too much in a hurry to get where they were going.

I finally nudged my way out into traffic, and before I could get to the next stop light, less than a quarter of a mile down the road…
